Hi there
The York Coalition of Disabled People has been asked to carry out some "capacity building" research with disabled people in York, to find out what the key issues are and to initiate a process of greater involvement of disabled people in decision-making.
We are exploring how appropriate different participatory techniques can be for working with a range of disabled people with different impairments, initially people in day centres and residential homes. Does anybody have any experience of using participatory appraisal techniques as a research tool with other disabled people? We are particularly interested in people's experiences of what works and what doesn't, and examples of where PA tools have been effectively employed to get some kind of collective debate, reflection and action.
Lots of issues involved (as always).. but would be interested to know whether anyone has had any experience of participatory appraisal techniques (either as a facilitator or participant) and whether you thought they were more effective than more traditional research tools. One avenue we are thinking of exploring is "photovoice", asking people to take pictures of their weekly routines, as a catalyst for group discussion. If anyone has done this, it would be useful to know how it worked, and any pointers you may have.. Plus any other PA ideas would be useful.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
