Background

simulation, to proof-of-concept demonstrators.  Our remit is to identify, and
advance through research, the technologies needed for future products.

Summary

Joining a small group of Human Factors specialists working within the Motorola
UK Research Laboratory, the post holder will provide a user focus on research
projects by applying user-centred design and usability techniques to investigate
user requirements, and implement and evaluate prototype user interfaces for
future innovative wireless services and applications.  Possible topics may
include research into the effects of different types of media on communications,
and data management for mobile multimedia applications

The post holder will be required to investigate multimedia user requirements,
interactions and interfaces, taking an application-focused approach and
considering products that will reach the market in 3 to 5 years,.  This includes
evaluation of different multimedia research technologies in terms of their
effective integration in future wireless devices; cross-disciplinary
communication skills are therefore essential.

The position will involve fundamental human factors research, prototype design,
implementation and evaluation.  Given the wide scope of the work, the candidate
may be required to work on multiple parallel projects.  Some contributions to
European collaborative projects may be expected. The post holder will also have
the opportunity to work with universities and maintain ties with other important
European work on wireless applications and interfaces.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator, particularly to those
inexperienced in the field of human computer interaction.  In addition, they
will have experience in one or more of the following:

*       user-centered design process
*       user requirements elicitation
*       contextual analysis and design
*       multimedia and multimodal user interface design
*       cognitive modeling and cognitive ergonomics
*       ergonomics and human factors

In addition, some relevant industrial research experience is preferred.

The postholder must have the ability to work on multidisciplinary project teams,
where he/she will be expected to contribute towards integration of user-centred
design principles with technology development.  In addition, the post holder
should be highly self-motivated with the ability to work unsupervised and take
responsibility for delivering results.

Qualifications: Good first degree in psychology or computer science with
preferably a higher degree and/or research experience in human factors or
human-computer interaction.
