Economic evaluation in social welfare: Developing methods and learning from
practical experience
Dear Colleagues,
As part of a Joseph Rowntree Foundation sponsored project at the London
School of Economics, a network and series of workshops promoting inter
disciplinary collaboration and discussion on the use of economics in social
welfare evaluation has been established. As part of this on-going process, a
one day workshop will be held at the University of Sheffield on Thursday
26th July (10.00 am - 16.00 pm)
The workshop will explore issues in the continuing development of methods
for the use of economic evaluation, and will also examine how economic
evaluation has been applied in practice in a multi disciplinary environment,
drawing on examples from a number of areas in social welfare, including
adoption, family/social support, crime and community health interventions.
Furthermore the workshop will also highlight new developments in generating
an evidence base for social welfare evaluation, including the work of the
Campbell Collaboration.
Speakers will include: Sarah Byford, Centre for the Economics of Mental
Health, Paul Dolan, University of Sheffield, Jacqueline Mallender, MHA
Research Consultancy, David McDaid, LSE Health and Social Care, Jane
Morrell, University of Sheffield, Geraldine MacDonald, University of
Bristol, Miranda Mugford, University of East Anglia, Ruben Mujica,
University of East Anglia, Tom Sefton Centre for Analysis for Social
Exclusion, London School of Economics and Julie Selwyn, University of
Bristol,
A limited number of travel bursaries for students undertaking higher
research/taught courses in the UK will be available on a first come first
serve basis. Please let me know if you are a student and wish to apply for a
travel bursary, stating why attendance at the workshop would be of interest
to you.
There is no charge for this event and lunch will be provided, but due to
limited space attendance at the workshop is strictly by RSVP only.
Please e-mail me if you wish to reserve a place and/or to receive further
details about the programme.
Kind Regards
David McDaid
