O chestnut-tree, great-rooted blossomer,
Are you the leaf, the blossom or the bole?
O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,
How can we know the dancer from the dance?
W.B.Yeats
Some of us identify most readily as a body; others as a soul. Others identify
as a mind - in fact, perhaps this is the easiest way to experience ourselves
in mainstream society. Minds are important, but so are bodies, and souls; and
these don't have to be opposite to each other. The soul can express through
the body; the body can shape the soul. 'Spirit' originally meant 'breath',
the breath of life; and focusing on the body's breath is one of the most
universal ways to awaken the soul.
On this workshop, we will be exploring in particular the two facets of our
wholeness which are labelled 'body' and 'soul'. But we will be experiencing
each in the light of the other, and looking at the dance they make together.
One quality which body and soul share is that they are both unreasonable, not
subject to the mind's reasons; each in its own way is led by desire. We will
be asking ourselves: what are the deepest desires of our bodies and our
souls? And can they be reconciled with each other? What does it take, in
fact, to keep body and soul together?
We will be working in pairs, in small groups, and all together as a group,
using a range of therapy techniques.
