TONDELLI: NEW CONTEXTS
Institute of Romance Studies,
University of London Senate House, Malet Street, London
22nd February 2002
More than a decade after the death of Pier Vittorio Tondelli, and in light
of the publication by Bompiani of his Opere, this conference aims both to
re-assess critically the literary and cultural significances of the life
and work of this pluralistic and very productive writer, and to identify
new or re-defined directions in the critical reception of his work, which
might be generated by the detachment from the decade and century with
which he has been so inextricably associated. The conference will seek to
remove the writer and his writings from the myth which has been
constructed around Tondelli both in his life and since his death, and to
consider how each of the two aspects dialogues with or influences the
other, both negatively and positively. Similarly, the conference aims to
extract Tondelli from specifically Italian surroundings and to take
account of writers, movements, theories, from outside Italian culture
which might offer alternative perspectives on his significance. It is
hoped that a new context or contexts in which to view Tondelli and his
work will be shaped in the course of the day's discussions.
Speakers will include the contemporary Italian writer, Silvia Ballestra,
and other writers and critics who worked with or are influenced by
Tondelli, as well as academics studying his work or issues related to it.
Papers are invited which approach and analyse Tondelli's cultural presence
and his works in innovative ways. Central themes or approaches might
include:
youth
sexuality
consumer culture
genres of writing
artistic media
AIDS
postmodernism
contemporary Italian critical culture
Papers, in Italian or English, should last no more than twenty-five
minutes. Abstracts of not more than 500 words should be sent by e-mail or
post to Dr Jennifer Burns (addresses below) no later than
