italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Call for Papers
Exile
International Medieval Congress, Leeds
8 - 11 July 2002
The International Medieval Congress aims to provide a forum for
interdisciplinary discussion of all aspects of the European Middle
Ages, AD 300-1500. For the year 2002, the IMC will dedicate a
special thematic strand, comprising 24 sessions, to Exile. Scholars
from all disciplines and countries working within the medieval field
are invited to submit sessions and papers which deal with this
theme.
Please note, however, that Exile is not intended to be an exclusive
theme, but that sessions and papers will be welcomed, as always,
on all aspects of Medieval Studies.
Our intent is to foster a conversation among the multiple disciplines
of medieval studies, including anthropology, archaeology, art
history, intellectual history, medicine, religions and theology,
philosophy, and science. It is hoped that scholars will approach the
concept of Exile in an interdisciplinary fashion, and consider it at
metaphorical and literary level. Participants are invited to consider
proposals from all time periods, from the Late Antiquity to the Early
Renaissance, focusing on Exile within, into and out of Europe. Dr
Wendy Childs, Dr Catherine Keen and Dr Mary Swan from the
University of Leeds will coordinate the strand.
Areas for discussion might include:
Banishment
Biblical paradigms
Damnatio memoriae
Excommunication and interdict
Exile in art
Exile in literature
Hermits and recluses
Legal processes
Language and rhetoric of exile
Literary paradigms: quest, wilderness
Medical aspects: leprosy, quarantine
Motivation of self-exile
Outlawry and criminal exile
Penitential exile
Pilgrimage
Political aspects of exile
Social exclusion
Relict cultures
Theology of exile
The deadline for submission of individual 20 minute papers,
including abstracts for IMC 2002 is 31 August 2001. For
