Mortality among people of all ages who have diabetes is increased, even in
the most affluent group. However, worsening material
deprivation increases this excess mortality, mostly through cardiovascular
causes. Roper et al (p 1389) used a 7 year cohort study
to show that aggressive approaches to managing cardiovascular risk factors
could reduce the excess mortality in people with
diabetes.
