It turned out to be not a problem. The majority of students looked at the alternatives and decided the report and essay paper was preferable; of the ones that initially opted for coursework, only one actually completed , the rest dropping out in favour of the exam alternative when faced with the prospect of actually doing the research and analysis.
The book by Gillespie has 40 reports for practice, and I find the students actually enjoy doing them. They are not so keen on essays though.
