One model suggested to me by a colleague is to go back
to the 'old' system where all work is assessed at A
Level standard (this removes the AVCE distortion where
it is harder in Y12 than AS) with a maximum of 6 hours
assessment overall. Keep the six module format and
specify two that are synoptic. Students then can have
the choice of whether or not to cash in for an AS AT
ANY TIME - they can cash in any three modules provided
at least one is synoptic. Alternatively they complete
the full six and receive an A Level.
This has the benefit of reducing assessment time and
removing the importance of the Year 12 examinations.
My experience with the 'old' AEB modular syllabus was
that it was a considerably less stressful experience
for both staff and pupils because there was no time in
the course (apart from the end) when there was any
sense of 'this is the exam that counts'.
