--Subject: [danmail] Sack Low
Extract from the June/July issue of TUDA News - the magazine of the Trades
Union Disability Alliance.
A New Low
Following the row that erupted over the recent talk given by Colin Low at the
City University, TUDA challenges his right to remain as a Commissioner with
the Disability Rights Commission (DRC).
Speaking to a ticket only audience, which included by invitation mainly the
great and the good - but also some of our own, Low spoke out against the
Disabled People’s Movement Civil Rights Agenda and the Social Model
understanding of Disability.
TUDA Challenge
TUDA co-Chair Jeni Price challenges his role as a Commissioner for disability
rights. She told TUDA News: “ He seems to be blatantly trying to undermine
so much of what we have been fighting for over so many years.”
She added: “We know that the Commissioners don’t ‘represent’ us, but to
have a Disabled person in that role, who appears to be working against the
interests of so many Disabled people, is deeply disturbing.”
Writing to Minister
TUDA will be writing to the new Minister for Disabled People (whoever that
may be after the election) to insist that Low is not reappointed as a
Commissioner in the New Year.
(Ed: A certain proportion of them will be up for renewal in the New Year,
including the said Mr Low).
We urge TUDA members to do likewise and copy their letter to Bob Niven, Chief
Executive of the DRC. It will also be worth copying in Bert Massie, who is
Chair of the DRC and a member of TUDA.
