This is a call for papers for the AAG 2002 in LA for the following
session:
"'Race', Sexuality and Geography" (Convenor: Camila Bassi)
This session aims to address the links and relationships
between the geographies of sexualities and the geographies of
racialisations. There has been a noticeable absence of research
within geography dealing with the interconnections/overlaps
between these two fields of enquiry. However, there is a range of
current research that indicates both the need to challenge the
ethnocentricity of enquiries into sexuality and space, and the
potentiality of these 'new territories' in redefining geographical
studies of 'race' and sexuality.
Suggested topics (far from an exhaustive list):
Constructions of 'race' and sexuality;
'Whiteness' and sexuality;
The racialisation of sexualities (queer/heterosexual/etc.);
The sexualisation of 'race';
Commercial gay space as a racialised space;
Non-Western sexualities;
Globalisation and sexual identifications/experiences;
Sex tourism and the commodification of 'desire';
Consuming the 'Other';
Inclusion/exclusion of sexual and 'racial' identities within differential
sexual and 'racial' spaces;
Negotiating multi-identifications relating to 'race', sexuality, class,
gender, age, etc.
Please submit your abstract and full contact details to Camila
Bassi at the address below, or email an attachment to
[log in to unmask], by 25th July 2001.
