Tony,
The Office 2000 Developer Edition (ODE) (software, costs approx 450$) includes
tools to assist in the creation of COM Addins, by enabling the office developer
to create and compile ActiveX dlls. A version of VB6 is included within the ODE.
For books, I recommend you to do a search on Amazon and read some customer
reviews. Here's one that might help you

Subject: QUERY VB book
I want to learn how to write a Visual Basic dll containing several
functions to be called from a command bar in Excel. I understand that I
can submit the dll to Excel as a COM add-in. Information in the MS
manuals is scattered, hard to find and obscure. I have sought advice
from several people who claim to be experts but they can't answer my
questions.
So, I need a good book.
Could you recommend one please?
With many thanks,
Cheers, Tony Greenfield
