Hi
Globalization and gender was one of the item out of the Quebec 2001
summit,In our part of the globe: it was the effect of free-trade in the
Americas on gender, lots of good points were raised at the people summit,
although I have been expressing my anger at the lack of disability issues
and presence of disability activist there, I have to admit the analysis has
been great. The re-newer interest in the socialist position (new left) has
emerged from there. Look up the newsletter " www. rabble.ca
For those in Europe, look out for Quebec activist Francoise David she led
the International women's march & the gathering of People's summit in Quebec
city

Subject: GENDER
> Dear Sir, Fellow Activists and/or Researchers,
>
> Is it possible for any of you to please tell me something about the impact
globalization has had on gender? I live in Victoria, Australia and am doing
an essay on this for a "Community Health" component in a Diploma of
Community Development". If you could answer my question/s, or, at least
tell me the name of a person (that I could contact on the www.) or, as a
last resort, as time is running out for me, a book in which I could look to
find answers, I would be most grateful.

> Do you think the worsening environmental situation is having an impact on
genitally "malformed" children, and is this "problem" getting worse,
especially in the Third World? How much of this is due to globalization's
bad environmental practices?
>
> I recently saw a documentary on television which portrayed the story of a
10 yr. old British (her parents had to fight to get her sex status changed
to "female" on her birth-certificate) who uninary apparatus was "fused", I
think, to her vagina. The child was still in nappies, but was refusing to
let the doctors operate. Do you think her parents should have insisted on
this being done?
>
> Are these "problems" becoming more prevalent because of
globalization/environmen-tal degredation as that programme suggested, do you
think? In the West or the "Third World"?
>
> Finally, do you think the Internet, (globalization again!) will have a
positive impact on enabling people accross the world to share information on
these issues and therefore stop the secracy, shame and misinformation
clouding them and giving doctors the opportunity to think they can forecast
gender before puberty and "mutilate" people?
>
> Thanking you most sincerely in anticipation,
>
> "Sundari"
>
> PS. If you could get back to me as soon as possible it would be very
helpful as the essay (and accompanying presentation!) are due quite soon.
As I am disabled by Cerebral Palsy, I am a slow typist...
