Dear all
A reminder! We already have a number of abstracts for these
sessions concerning the regulation of labour, the environment,
citizenship, and economic networks. People with research interests in
those areas are particularly encouraged to submit abstracts,
although these are just pointers to particular clusters of interest,
and all are welcome.
CALL FOR PAPERS
RGS-IBG ANNUAL CONFERENCE - BELFAST 2002
EGRG SESSION (4 modules)
Spaces and sites of regulation
Session convenors:
Neil Coe & Kevin Ward, School of Geography, University of Manchester.
This one-day session aims to develop critical geographical perspectives
on evolving regulatory processes. Spaces and sites of regulation are
being re-cast and re-worked in light of an on-going series of
economic, cultural and political transformations. From the body to
the global, from highly institutionalised forms of governance to
tacit norms and conventions, from diffuse networks to tightly bounded
arenas, we are seeing ever-more reflexive actions on behalf of
individuals, institutions and states as they attempt to negotiate
this complex terrain. For example, Burawoy et al' (2000) recent work
on the forces, connections and imaginations in a postmodern world
alerts us to the need to re-think empirically, methodologically and
theoretically about how diverse spaces and sites are mutually
constituted, and the regulatory challenges this poses.
In this session, we hope to bring together papers that demonstrate
innovative approaches to these contradictions and dilemmas. Using
the regulatory process as a lens, we are keen to open up the session
to papers that embrace the broad spectrum of contemporary economic
geography.
More specifically, we encourage the submission of paper abstracts
on the following themes:
· 'Economy' e.g. globalisation, labour markets, innovation, informal activity
· 'State' e.g. regionalisation, governance, privatisation, surveillance
· 'Society' e.g. social movements, citizenship, exclusion, environment
Please send a paper title and abstract of no more than 250 words to
Neil Coe before 22nd June 2001.
