Gary:
Michael Costen at CHE in Bristol has found a wonderful 17th century court
case involving this well, where a group from the adjacent village went to
the well during the time of service and 'baptised' each other with names
like 'Nine counts' and 'Long prickes' (as he delicately copies the spelling
faithfully!). You could get more details from Michael by e-mailing him at
Bristol University. I *think* he is [log in to unmask], but the D
might be left out - you should be able to contact him through their Web
site,though.
Other than that, I am aware of a tradition that the well is supposed to be
visited by Arthurs knights on certain evenings in the year, but the myths
have been confused by their embellishment in Geoffrey Ashe's novels about
Glastonbury.
Hope this helps
