Many thanks again to all who have sent references. My copy of Athene
Reiss's book has at last returned home and I can check my references. She
refers (p 18) to the appearance of the phrase Saint Sunday in the Sunday
Letter, a piece of homily dating from the C7 and translated into English
and Welsh in the late medieval period.
'if ye amend yow nott and Seynt Sonday kepe nott and yowr othre dere dayes
and festes , I shall distroy yow'.
She also refers (ibid) to several examples of images described as St Sunday
and to cult practices associated with them. The earliest reference she
quotes for a description of the image of Christ's wounded body surrounded
by craft implements is unfortunately not until 1633.
