Dear Mel,
Your messages recalled for me many amusing memories of my post-polio Mom who
was one of the first people to take advantage of New York City's earliest
trial of handicapped pkg permits. There were no handicapped pkg spaces back
then; she was allowed to park in certain categories of "no parking" areas.
Many police did not know that her permit allowed her to park in these areas,
so she received a lot of tickets, none of which she had to pay. Luckily, I
don't believe her car was ever towed. Some of our relatives would not allow
her to drive because they disapproved of where she parked, and they would
leave her off before seeking parking. I did all the family shopping by bike
until she was allowed to park right outside the local supermarket. I was
surprised to learn how much she enjoyed shopping when she could do it, the
cart being better than her cane. She died over 30 years ago, one of the
pioneers of handicapped parking.
Thanks for evoking the memory of listening to her tell the story of yet
another conversation with an angry policeman warning her not to leave her
car "there".
