Internet Archaeology is pleased to announce the publication of
'Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian Cottam: linking digital publication and
archive' by Dr Julian Richards (University of York)
http://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue10/richards_index.html
The presence of Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian settlements at Cottam, East
Yorkshire, was first indicated by metal detecting finds in 1980s, and this
report presents the results of fieldwork (survey and excavation) carried
out between 1993-5. Although urban centres such as Anglian Eoforwic and
Anglo-Scandinavian Jorvik (modern day York) are well documented, little is
known about the rural settlement of the same period. The research at
Cottam attempts to redress this imbalance.
The article, originally published in the Archaeological Journal, is novel
in a second way, having been developed in close association with the
Archaeology Data Service to contribute to the debate as to what an
interactive, integrated publication might look like. The complete report
detailing the excavations at Cottam is published. Alongside this,
fieldwalking, metal-detecting and geophysical survey summaries as well as
a searchable database of over 1700 entries of finds from all the
interventions at the site are also presented. Almost every section of the
publication however leads the reader, should they wish, into the raw
detail that lies 'behind' the interpretation, into the digital archive
housed by the ADS.
Your comments about this publication are always welcome.
Please also note: access to Internet Archaeology will have changed for
many readers. See the link from the Table of Contents of the article for
details.
