Dear Colleagues,
I regret that I must tell you that a great friend of Industrial Archaeology
has passed on. John Light, an Industrial Archaeologist for Parks Canada
passed away early on Wednesday morning apparently due to heart failure. I
do not have a great deal of information but thought that I should share
what I know. He was a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University and an active
member of the Society for Industrial Archaeology. In recent years he made
substantial contributions to our field, presenting a thoughtful paper on
the state of Canadian IA to the Whither Industrial Archeology conference
in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1998, developing the paper into an article for
the journal IA with colleague Christopher Andreae (vol 25, Number 2, 1999)
entitled Industrial Archaeology in Canada: A Binocular View. He helped to
organize numerous efforts toward the industrial archaeology of 19th
century oil resources in SW Ontario 1999 - present, including the SIA fall
tour for 2000 and an industrial archaeology field school that is to be held
there in June and July, 2001. He has started a dialogue that has resulted
in partnerships activities among Parks Canada, the (U.S.) National Parks
Service, Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Western Ontario, and
West Virginia University. He recently completed an eloquent encyclopedia
article on Industrial Archaeology for a forthcoming publication of UNESCO.
John was a really wonderful man, and his death has saddened many. He will
be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
Below are some details that I received via email over the past two days.
sincerely,
Dan Bonenberger
