PhD studentship to study basic mechanisms and clinical
applications of the pupil response with emphasis on chromatic
responsivity
The AVRC has been pursuing a number of studies of pupil
response mechanisms and clinical applications over several years.
New instrumentation for pupillometry and eye-movement recording
and a range of psychophysical tests based on advances in digital
imaging and visual display technology have been implemented on
the P_SCAN 100 system. This instrument makes possible the
measurement of extremely small pupil responses that are normally
elicited in response to changes in neural activity in extrastriate
visual areas of the cortex. Studies in normal subjects and patients
with damaged visual pathways have resulted in the discovery of a
number of pupil response components. Such measurements yield
useful information about the processing of spatially structured
patterns, motion or chromatic signals.
The present study will be concerned mostly with pupil responses to
chromatic stimuli in normal subjects and in patients with damaged
visual pathways. The aim of the project is to isolate the different
components of the pupil response and to measure the spectral
responsivity of these components, both in normal vision and in
blindsight. The successful applicant will join a research group that
includes John Barbur, Alister Harlow and Larry Weiskrantz.
The project provides skilled technical support with development of
optical instrumentation and specialised programming. The position
is open to a keen graduate with an interest in research and in
particular the application of basic visual science to clinical
research. A good background in physics, experimental
psychology, optometry or a scientific or engineering discipline is
essential. Interest in visual science, neurology or brain imaging
studies would be a distinct advantage. For more information and an
application form, prospective applicants are invited to contact:
