Malta – a linguistic landscape by Lydia Sciriha and Mario Vassallo documents
the results of a scientifically representative survey on language use in
Malta, in February 2001. The research instrument used is the same as the one
adopted for a European-wide survey by Eurobarometer in December 2000.
This study documents the extent to which different languages are spoken in
Malta and Gozo. It documents what the Maltese make of language studies, and
particularly of Maltese, their native language, which has acquired new
social significance since its recognition as the official language of a
young nation-state.
