Applications are invited for a three-year full-time research assistant to work
on a major research project funded by the EC under Framework Five from 1
October 2001. This is a chance to be involved in cross-national research
involving senior academics in seven European countries and dealing with the key
issues facing the future of social policy. The work will be supervised by
Professor Peter Taylor-Gooby at Kent.
You will have a good honours degree and preferably a postgraduate social
science qualification that includes research methods, experience of carrying
out and analysing discursive interview data and an interest in comparative
social and public policy. The appointment will be made on the RA1B Scale (point

FURTHER PARTICULARS: RESEARCH ASSISTANT IN THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL POLICY,
SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL RESEARCH REF: R01/10
Job Description
The primary tasks are to carry out interviews with key actors in the social
policy-making process in the UK and in the EC and literature review on
comparative public policy in Europe and contribute to the analysis of the data
gathered, at the direction of the grant-holder, Professor Peter Taylor-Gooby.
Additional tasks involve:
1. Assisting in the organisation of project conferences;
2. Liaison with collaborators in the six-country research team;
3. Assisting in the production and promotion of project web pages;
4. Identifying relevant research projects on the comparative analysis of social
and public policy in EC countries and obtaining reports and other material from
them;
5. Report writing;
6. Preparation of material for academic publication and conference
presentation;
7. Participating in writing for publication and delivering presentations as
appropriate.
The Research Assistant will be responsible to the grant-holder. The post does
not involve supervisory responsibilities.
Person Specification
The essential requirements are:
1. Skills in carrying out discursive interviews;
2. Analysis of data from these sources;
3. Skills in literature review;
4. Knowledge of the literature on comparative social policy with special
reference to the EC;
5. Education of at least first degree level.
Desirable qualities are:
1. Experience in report writing and writing for academic presentation and
publication;
2. Interest in the field of the future of European welfare states.
3. A postgraduate qualification in a social science that includes relevant
research methods training.
