DC Folks,
Commercial applications of Dublin Core show us that people want to use
metadata to enhance commerce. This is exciting, because we all know that
such activities help to attract development dollars, and the more
applications there are to support metadata, the more valuable all our data
becomes. We've recently had very good news on this front, with the
publication of the PRISM standard and its adoption by Adobe, for example.
The link below describes a cutting edge application of Dublin Core and the
RSS (RDF Site Summary) protocol to support a syndication model for metadata
and content. The O'Reilly network's Meercat Open Wire service uses metadata
for discovery, but also as switching elements to direct content in automated
ways. Rael Dornfest, the lead developer of this work, presented it in
Ottawa last October as a prototype. This is a model that is liable to
become increasingly important in servicing our constituents, whether
commercial customers, library patrons, or citizens in need of government
information. Check out the link below for more information.
