This debate marks the launch of The Contemporary Giddens: social
theory in a globalizing age
by Christopher Bryant and David Jary - a book which opens up for
academic and general
readers who Anthony Giddens is, what he has done in his academic
life over more than 40
years, and how his work over the last decade on modernity and
globalisation underpins his
current public and political activities.
Three aspects of Professor Giddens' career will be discussed:
Giddens the public intellectual
and the Third Way; Giddens and the globalisation debate; and
Giddens and the debate on
late/post-modernity
Christopher Bryant is Professor of Sociology and Dean of the
Faculty of Arts, Media and
Social Sciences at the University of Salford.
David Jary is Research Professor at Staffordshire University and
Visiting
Professor at Birmingham University where he is co-ordinator for
sociology.
Professors Bryant and Jay are co-editors of Anthony Giddens:
Critical Reassessments and
Giddens' Theory of Structuration.
