Dear all,
Thanks to everyone who responded to my plea. I've got a quite
varied response but, as Dave Featherstone noted, it appears that
not enough has been done on this subject area. Anyway for those
interested here's a bibliography based on what I received from
others and thought of myself:

democratization in Hispanic countries. Westport, CN: Greenwood

Zukin, S 1995 The Cultures of Cities (some key thinkers with
respect to streets (especially shopping streets))
Other ideas with no specific references were to look at Hakim
Bey's work on TAZ, Mikhail Bakhtin's work on carnival (and to
Haussmann's project as an attempt to bring order/control to street
politics. Also the mayday websites offer a contemporary flavour of
what's happening
