I've long since abandoned what one irate consultant referred to as "the
Protestant Work Ethic" (when I told him one Sunday evening to come in and
clerk in his own routine admissions for Monday morning surgery as I'd sent
his exhausted JHO to bed and taken her bleep).
Basically, this country can afford a far better health service than it is
paying for, but people want to spend their money on big houses and BMWs
rather than pay more tax for health care.
It's a democracy, they are grown ups, and that's their right. However, to
then expect the NHS staff to sacrifice their own health and family to work
countless hours looking after them while they sue us for falling asleep on
the job is frankly not acceptable. I now want to see the money (and the
working conditions).
As one BMW-driving cancer patient said this week (after being told off for
complaining about the dismal state of the ward he was put in when his
private health people made a mess of his care) "You don't know [how bad
things have become] until you need it". He's kindly donated a large sum to
the ward, but it's too little too late for him.
