Publication announcement:
The Creation of Monuments: Neolithic Causewayed Enclosures in the British
Isles, by Alastair Oswald, Carolyn Dyer and Martyn Barber
Published by English Heritage, April 2001. Price 30 UK pounds. 180 pages,
136 illustrations.
Neolithic causewayed enclosures are among the oldest, rarest and most
enigmatic of the prehistoric monuments of the British Isles. However, as a
class they remain poorly understood, with much attention being given to just
a handful of well-excavated sites.
This book represents the findings of a programme of research undertaken by
RCHME, now merged with English Heritage. During the course of the project,
every certain, probable and suggested Neolithic causewayed enclosure in
England was investigated via integrated aerial and field survey plus
archival research. All sites are illustrated, the majority as AP
transcriptions or earthwork plans, plus a selection of aerial and ground
photographs. Information on sites in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
has also been incorporated, bringing the number of sites discussed to 138,
69 of which are regarded as definite or possible Neolithic causewayed
enclosures. This represents a major increase in the number of sites known.
Key chapters consider the long history of Neolithic enclosure studies in the
British Isles; the overall forms and the main construction elements of
causewayed enclosures; their location and distribution in the physical
landscape; their place in the human landscape; the uses and meanings of
causewayed enclosures; and the "afterlife" of enclosures - what happened
after the Early Neolithic. As well as recommendations for future research,
there is a detailed gazetteer of all sites investigated, plus information on
accessing the more detailed site information available in the National
Monuments Record.
The book can be ordered from English Heritage Postal Sales, Knights of Old
