Dear Spenserians and Sidneans: those of you who are planning
to attend Spenser at Kalamazoo, might have noticed that a "Business
Meeting with Cash Bar" is scheduled for 8:00 Friday evening, May 4th. This
is somewhat misleading, although there will indeed be a bar open. In fact,
instead of a business meeting, Spenser at Kalamazoo is sponsoring an open
forum on a question that received much attention on the List Serv last
Spring: Candie Wooly's query about "why Spenser's work is still important
today."
Lauren Silberman, Ted Steinberg, and John Webster will join Rob
Stillman on a panel to pose that question in a slightly different
form: "Why Spenser Matters"--matters to us as scholars, teachers,
professionals, or interested readers--and to elicit, most importantly,
discussion about those matters from the audience. In the best tradition of
Kalamazoo, the panel promises to be painlessly brief and to encourage
what we hope will be good conversation. If you are coming to K'zoo, please
do plan to attend.
Anne Prescott, for the K'zoo Committee.
