CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT
WITTGENSTEIN'S LASTING SIGNIFICANCE
Gregynog, University of Wales Conference Centre, near Newtown,
mid-Wales
14-16 July 2001
Wittgenstein was undoubtedly a major figure in philosophy's last
hundred years. But quite how innovative was his philosophical vision?
Taking the opportunity of commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of
his death, we wish to reflect on whether Wittgenstein permanently
altered the philosophical landscape or whether he was a brilliant
thinker whose ideas could be assimilated within existing philosophical
traditions. We have invited independently minded philosophers, whose
own work shows attention to and an understanding of Wittgenstein's
ideas, to appraise his lasting significance in their respective
fields.
List of speakers: Simon Blackburn, James Conant, Paul Horwich,
Pirmin Stekeler, Peter Sullivan, Meredith Williams, Michael Williams,
Crispin Wright.
The conference will run from Saturday, 14th July in the afternoon
until Monday, 16th July after lunch.
The registration fee is £20 (10 for postgrads). The cost of full board
accommodation is £40 per night (£20 for postgrads, £18 for
postgrads of the University of Wales). Thus the overall cost is £100
(£50 for postgrads, £46 for Welsh postgrads, NB: number of
subsidised places limited).
This conference is supported by the British Academy, by the Mind
Association, and by the University of Wales Lampeter. The extremely
favourable full board rates have been made possible by the Gregynog
Colloquia Fund, the student reductions have been made possible by
the support of the Analysis Trust.
To register, send your details (see registration form below) and a
cheque for the relevant amount, payable to "University of Wales
Lampeter", to Bernhard Weiss, Philosophy Department, University of
Wales Lampeter, Lampeter SA48 7ED. Please register as soon as
possible (places are limited), but definitely before the 30th of April
2001.
If you wish to apply for a postgraduate student reduction (and are not
a student of the University of Wales), please send £50 in the first
instance. We shall then inform you whether you have succeeded in
securing one of the limited reduced rate places.
