Kipling wrote in a letter to Dr Vaughan Bateson on 29 July 1909 that the
authors referred to in 'Literature' were as follows:
'Tinker in Bedford:- Bunyan
Pamphleteer in London:- Defoe
Muzzy Scotsman:- Boswell
German Jew:- Heine
French Thief:- Villon
English Admiralty Official:- Pepys.'
He added 'So you nearly got 'em all right.' In some
correspondence about this on the mailbase last year, people thought 'muzzy
Scot' a poor description of Boswell and felt it could equally have meant
Burns. Bateson may have thought so too! Lisa Lewis
