Well, this is not even a SPSS problem. SPSS is for numbers, not for
texts. You can code responses to open ended questions with other
software, but please keep your texts away from SPSS (well, if you are a
bit masochistic .... ;)
You have to categorise your texts, and favourite foods is an easy
example. Get your text into a text analysis system like TextQuest
(http://www.textquest.de) or others of this kind (for an overview see at
http://www.intext.de/textanae.htm). All the names of foods are your
search patterns, and each food (or group of food) gets a unique number.
Then the search patterns are looked for in your texts, and the codes are
written to a raw data matrix that can be read by SPSS. You create a
system file of these responses and merge it to rest of the data. Well,
that's it.
