BCS Electronic Publishing Group Seminar:
Turning over new leaves: e-books and print on demand
Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies,
Russell Square, London WC1
10 May 2001, 10.00 am to 5.00 pm
The publishing of books has remained essentially unchanged for
many years,
even if the technologies have changed. Now, however, there have
been two
changes that not only affect how books are produced, but also how
they are
marketed and sold.
These two changes, e-books and print on demand, appear to be
catering for
very different markets. However, they have a great deal in common
as far
as
the production side is concerned. Both involve producing files that
can be
re-used (for printing or viewing).
This meeting, therefore, will look at e-books and print on demand
from the
points of view of different participants in the process, an author,
publishers, software houses, etc., as well as including
presentations
based
on recent reports on the two markets.
Speakers (subject to final confirmation) will include:
John Birkenshaw of Pira International, who will discuss Print on
Demand,
markets and options, based on a recent Pira International report.
Feona Hamilton of the University of London Library and author of
novel
Belaset's Daughter, which is available over the Internet (see
http://www.bosonbooks.com/boson/fiction/belaset/belaset.html),
who will
talk about e-books from the author's and the librarian's point of view.
John Jarman, representing DavTel, who will describe the technical
aspects
of the UK-based Davtel delivery system for electronic books and
the
operation of the t.boook (sic).
Kate Worlock of Electronic Publishing Services Ltd, who will
discuss
Opportunities for e-books, based on EPS's recent report.
John Worsfold of Dolphin Computers, who will discuss e-book
technologies.
Suzanne Wilson-Higgins of Lightning Source UK Ltd, who will talk
about
digital formats, e-books and print on demand.
John Peacock of Macmillan, who will describe print on demand as
it used
for
academic books at Macmillan' Palgrave Press.
