Announcement from the British Library
David Russon, Deputy Chief Executive, and David Bradbury, Director General,
Collections and Services, have today announced that they will be leaving the
British Library this summer. Both have been members of the BL Board since
1988 and 1996 respectively. David Russon will leave on 11 June and David
Bradbury on 31 July.
Both have been key players in developing the foundation of the Library's
remote document supply operations and witnessed the sustained growth and
consolidation of the Document Supply Centre (DSC) as Europe's largest
document supplier.
David Russon joined the Library from the Office of Science, Technology and
Information (OSTI) in 1974 and became Deputy Chief Executive in 1996. He
oversaw the expansion of the Boston Spa site and was a driving force in
framing the Library's digital agenda. He will be particularly remembered
for spearheading the BL's relationship with STM publishers. David said,
'Working for the Library has been stimulating and challenging. It has
achieved a great deal, yet huge challenges still lie ahead. I wish it and
its staff every success in the future.'
Since joining the British Museum Library in 1972, David Bradbury has been
involved in almost every area of BL activity. His career included 20 years
at the Document Supply Centre, with six of those as DSC Director, before
becoming Director General and member of the BL Board in 1996.
As Director General, David succeeded in integrating the Library's
collections and services at the Boston Spa and London sites. He played a
key role in the BL strategic review in 1998 and in 1998/99 led the Zero
Based Review, bringing about efficiencies, savings and major cultural
changes in the Library. Throughout his career David has been actively
involved in partnership with other library sectors. He recently set up the
Library's Cooperation and Partnership Programme, which goes from strength to
strength and he was instrumental in framing the Library's New Opportunities
Fund (NOF) bid.
Commenting on his career with the Library, David said: 'It has been a great
privilege to have worked in the Library during its first 25 formative years,
and to have witnessed the great achievements of the Library to which its
whole staff have contributed. I look forward to seeing, from the outside,
that success being maintained in the digital age.'
Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive of the British Library said: 'In common with
other members of staff at the British Library, I would like to thank David
Russon and David Bradbury for their dedicated service to the BL and for
their many achievements throughout their long careers in the Library.'
