Health promotion: the theoretical debate

A one day seminar to consider current theories of health
promotion This is the fourth annual seminar on theory in
health promotion. The previous seminars have been very
successful with participants welcoming the opportunity to
hear and debate with leading thinkers on a variety of
issues concerning public health and health promotion. This
year's programme again features a hot line up of speakers
who present a theoretical perspective on some vital issues
of health promotion practice for today and for the
future.
Martine Standish Social and Community Development,
Sheffield Health, will present a paper on "Asylum seekers
what can they tell us about our health and health promotion
services." Martine will speak about her work with asylum
seekers and the challenges it poses for meeting needs: and
the social, ethical and political issues it raises.
Pete Alcock, Professor of Social policy and Administration,
and head of Social policy and Social Work at Birmingham
University, will pose the question, and discuss it too,
"Should we invest in social capital?"
Maria Duggan, Independent Health Policy Analyst ,will
address-"New Health policy and Health promotion: Strengths
and Weaknesses", and examine New Labours health policy and
consider the implications and how to strengthen health
promotion approaches in the second term
Alan Beattie, Professor, Health Promotion, University
College of St Martins, Lancaster, will discuss the changing
fortunes of dialogical education in the health context
Martin White, Senior Lecturer in Public Health, University
of Newcastle upon Tyne, addresses, "Resources for Health:
the Holy Grail of Health Promotion?" Martin will draw on
practical examples to characterise the nature of health
promotion resources and build the theory.
Sue Laughlin, Women's Health Co-ordinator, Glasgow Health
Board, on "Sex Gender and Women's Health, the Missing
Inequality?"
Martin Carraher, Principal Lecturer Health Promotion,
Centre for Food Policy, Thames Valley University,
will talk on "Health Promotion and food policy_the
battleground."
Ewan Armstrong, Health Promotion Consultant and Trainer,
will sum up the key issues from the day. The event will be
chaired by Lee Adams, Visiting Professor, Sheffield Hallam
University. The seminar will be of interest to health
promotion/public health specialists, academics and
activists; as well as those interested in this field. It is
not necessary to have attended the previous seminars to
find this one useful and enjoyable. The venue is close to
Baker St. tube station in London.
