The Centre for Census and Survey Research at the University of
Manchester is a lively inter-disciplinary research centre in the
Faculty of Social Science and Law. We host the Samples of
Anonymised Records from the Census of Population and conduct
methodological and substantive research on census microdata.
Our research programme includes gender and ethnic differences in
the labour market and longitudinal analysis of the life course.
We invite applications for three Collaborative (CASE) ESRC funded
studentships:
Race and population: a statistical demographic approach,
collaborative with Bradford City Council. Statistical methods will be
used to extend estimates of demographic rates to small area and
ethnic groups
Dr Mark Brown (CCSR) and Dr Ludi Simpson (Bradford City
Council)
Barriers to employment for South Asian women, collaborative with
the Department for Education and Employment
Professor Angela Dale (CCSR) and Richard Bartholomew (DfEE)
Confidentiality issues associated with neighbourhood statistics:
collaborative with the Office for National Statistics
Dr Mark Elliot (CCSR) and David Brown (ONS)

ESRC meets the tuition fees and pays a basic (tax free)
maintenance grant
of £6,800 pa. The collaborating organisation pays an additional £1,375 pa
for CASE students.
Applications must be sent to CCSR by April 30th.
We also welcome applications from students wishing to undertake
a PhD on other topics related to our research
(http://les1.man.ac.uk/ccsr/research/). UK or EU students may be
eligible to apply for an ESRC studentship. Applicants should have
a good first degree (first or upper second) in a social science
subject or statistics. In addition to any studentship, CCSR offers a
bursary of £1,000 pa.
