Dear Colleagues,

I shall be away lecturing in St Petersburg from
14 April to 10 May. For those of you who like email lists, I
append instructions below about how to join two
interesting ones, Seelangs (US), and H-Russia (US) on
Russian History/Russian Studies which is especially
interesting.

Don't forget that almost all lists (UK and US) now use the
Listserv software, which means that commands to the
server are pretty much the same for all lists.

Bear in mind that you DON'T HAVE to leave the list if you want
a rest from the messages. Just send the command
set listname nomail
(e.g.) set russian-studies nomail
to the address (for most UK lists): [log in to unmask]
and mail will cease until you re-start it.
To start receiving mail again, send the command
set listname mail
and messages will recommence.

If you forget how many Jiscmail lists you belong to (and
may have set to nomail) - send the command
query*
(Yes, just that) to [log in to unmask]
and the computer will tell you. You also have your own
subscription page for each list you belong to, on the
Jiscmail website. This contains more information about how
you can vary your personal mail options, for example have
messages sent to you in a digest, etc etc.
Jiscmail website: www.jiscmail.ac.uk

See you next month and Happy Easter if appropriate. AJ

WHAT IS SEELANGS?

SEELANGS is an e-mail-based forum for nonreal-time
communication over the Internet. Anyone who has an e-mail
address capable of sending and receiving mail on the Internet
may subscribe. It is an academic discussion list and is aimed
primarily at teachers and students of Russian and other Slavic
and East European languages and literature. It exists to
facilitate discussion of topics of interest to those people.

It works this way. A list member sends an e-mail message to
the list address. The message, in turn, is distributed to all the
list's subscribers. If someone responds to the message, the
reply, too, is distributed to everyone on the list. In this manner,
discussions ensue.

Because what is sent, or "posted," is distributed to the entire
list membership, everyone benefits from the exchanges, even if
they do not actively participate. Additionally, all posts are archived,
enabling list members to search for and retrieve any prior post.

At the time of its creation in 1991, SEELANGS was affiliated with
AATSEEL, The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East
European Languages. That affiliation is no longer official in any way
but there are many AATSEEL members subscribed to SEELANGS,
including members of the Executive Council and other standing
committees.

SEELANGS has been administered by list owner Alex Rudd since
March of 1993. Alex holds a B.A. in Russian and Soviet Studies from
Cornell University. Although he left the world of slavic studies many
years ago, he continues to donate his time and energy in support of the list.
Alex is assisted in list administration by SEELANGS' original list owner,
Robert Whittaker (Department of Germanic & Slavic, Lehman College,
City University of New York). You may feel free to direct questions,
comments, suggestions or criticisms to Alex and Robert at their list owners'
address: [log in to unmask]
SEELANGS is made possible through the generosity of the University
Computer Center of the City University of New York.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE

Subscribing to SEELANGS is a two-part process.

First, compose an e-mail message to:
[log in to unmask]

Put anything (or nothing) in the Subject: line (it gets ignored) and in the
main body of the text put only the following single line:
SUB SEELANGS FirstName LastName
(Using your own first and last names, of course.) Then send the message.

LISTSERV, which is the list-management software used to run the list,
will reply with further instructions. Follow them, and you will be subscribed.

Please address any questions to the list owners at:
[log in to unmask]

***********************************************************
***********************************************************
One of the most interesting US lists is History-Russia.
The actual title of the list is H-RUSSIA.
You need to email the command:

subscribe H-RUSSIA firstname lastname
for example
subscribe H-RUSSIA Andrew Jameson

to:
[log in to unmask]

They will email back with a questionnaire that you should
fill in and submit. Postings to this list are checked for
appropriateness before being accepted. This is SIMPLY
to avoid spam and any reasonable academic interest is
accepted.

After that, when you become a member, you need to mail
your postings to the list to the address
[log in to unmask]

************************************************************************
THERE ARE THREE UK LISTS WHICH IT MIGHT BE WORTH
JOINING:

russian-studies
russian-teaching
east-west-research
You can join all these if you like, they are open and free.
To join, simply follow the instructions below. To join the other
lists instead of russian-studies, simply substitute the name of
the other list for the words russian-studies in each case.

To join the russian-studies list, send the command

join russian-studies firstname lastname
(e.g. join russian-studies Andrew Jameson)
in the body of the message

Send this command to
    [log in to unmask]

Put nothing anywhere else and delete your signature
if you have one. In a few minutes you will receive a request
for confirmation. Follow the instructions and send this off.
You will receive confirmation in a few moments and can then
start sending messages.

To send a message to the list, send email to
       [log in to unmask]

All queries relating to this particular list should be sent to
       [log in to unmask]

All queries relating to the Jiscmail service should be sent to
        [log in to unmask]

All commands should be sent to the Jiscmail SERVER at
        [log in to unmask]

To leave this list send the command
        LEAVE russian-studies
to the Jiscmail SERVER at [log in to unmask]
