Apologies to those of you who have seen this call for papers before, but in
the hope of reaching as wide an audience as possible, can I ask you to draw
this to the attention of potential contributors. Thanks.

ON DISPLAY: EXHIBITION AND THE CITY
-----------------------------------
Session co-sponsored by the UGRG and HGRG
Phil Hubbard (Loughborough) and Keith Lilley (Queen's University Belfast)
Recent work on visual culture and urban experience has coalesced around the
idea that cities are spaces of display. In this session, we seek to develop
this idea, focusing on the way that the city is disclosed through its
public exhibition. Two key strands of thought are important here; firstly,
that the public spaces of the city offer up images and sights which
disclose some things but obscure others, and, secondly, that the (public)
city is made legible through interactive sites such as exhibitions,
displays and installations. We would therefore welcome papers developing
either (or both) of these themes, and would hope to develop a broad
collection of papers addressing such topics as:
- phantasmagoria and spectacle in the city
- the geographies of expos, installations and galleries
- the city as simulacra
- drama, theatre and the performative city
- mobilised and virtual sights
- civic sites, town trails and public art
- presenting the past, present and future of the city
Papers may address these themes in the context of pre-modern, modern or
post-modern cities, with contributions that consider the unfolding
histories of exhibition in the city particularly welcome.
