Hi Ray
In response to your question about upgrading from Mphil to PhD we
had to do a 5,000 transfer document in which you show what you
have done to date and then explain what you will do in the future
which will bring the work up to PhD status. This is then passed on
to 2 externals who comment upon your work before it all all sent to
the Research Degrees Comittee and they make their decision. I
think the process generally goes o.k if you get good help and
support from your supervisor.
The document involved demonstrating that the PhD would make a
significant contribution to knowledge, in terms of theory and
empirical research. I had a brief look at a book called 'How to Do a
PhD', which is the usual, but it helped redefine what a PhD was
and what 'a significant contribution to knowledge' actually meant.
Hope this is of some use.
Best Wishes
Siobhan
