The 'soft information systems and technologies methodology' (SISTeM):
An actor network contingency approach to integrated socio-technical
development
This presentation will describe the Soft Information Systems and
Technologies Methodology (SISTeM), and demonstrate its utility in
integrating informational and organisational development. The
methodology and its stages will be illustrated with examples from
Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) based projects, mainly in the
health sector over the last five years. Its antecedents in and
differences with Soft Systems Methodology are highlighted. The use of
the approach's underpinning concept of the human/machine activity system
is illustrated and its comparability with actor-network theory will be
explored. The nature of SISTeM as a social, political and technological
form of contingency methodology, integrating directly with other
information and organisational development approaches and disciplines,
will be demonstrated. SISTeM, it will be argued has capacity for
orchestrating the emergence, consolidation and continual development of
real world actor networks. That SISTeM itself can be seen as a
methodological non-human actor at work within a problem-solving actor
network will be proposed.
