> Role : The post requires an individual with considerable experience in
> the field of human factors who is able to use research methods to

> Current research covers: optimization of ships' complements via the
> introduction of new technology coupled with organisational and policy
> changes. Work to date has focused on teams of personnel in the
> Operations room (combat systems) and the Ship Control Centre (marine
> engineering systems and damage control). Work to optimize ships'
> complements involves conducting extensive analyses of the activities
> that are undertaken on current Naval platforms. In conjunction with
> assessments of future technological developments, task information is
> used in software simulations of proposed team structures and overall
> platform organisations. The work involves liasing with stakeholders in
> the UK and other researchers in the US to determine best practice in
> terms of developing Human Factors tools and techniques to support

> - The candidate will progress rapidly to managing work items and will
> then be responsible for the work of others including DERA staff and

> - The successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring more
> junior staff.
> - An important part of the task will be to provide direction to
> external contract staff and to monitor their progress and the quality
> of their delivered product.
> - Liaison with other sectors within DERA is becoming an increasingly
> important aspect of the work as is working co-operatively with other
> MoD personnel.
> - The successful candidate is expected to display an in-depth
> knowledge of the field of human factors/psychology and contribute to
> the wider body of scientific knowledge in these fields via
> publications, conference papers etc.

> Project Management

> - Projects are managed in accordance with set DERA procedures, to
> Quality Standard ISO9001. The candidate will be required to develop
> an in-depth knowledge of the Business Management System (BMS) and its
> application to their work, ensuring all members of project team(s)
> conform to the required procedures and processes.

> Customer liaison
>
> - The successful candidate will identify the needs of customers, and
> draft proposals for work including new and innovative items.
> - The successful candidate will be required to maintain regular
> contact with customers and military sponsors.
> - The successful candidate will be required to provide a high standard
> of deliverables, as negotiated with customers. These are likely to be
> in the form of written reports and presentations but may include the
> development of prototypes and equipment demonstrations.

> Person Specification :

> Essential

> A degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology or related
> discipline. Strong communication skills are essential. Candidates will
> be expected to deliver presentations describing their research work to
> a wide range of audiences including scientists, military personnel
> etc. The work requires commitment and enthusiasm for the topic and for
> achieving results. Flexibility will be required: there may be
> requirements to work on new items for limited periods at short notice.
> Career progression may be facilitated by a willingness to take on a
> range of projects and there will be opportunities to work in a range
> of human factors areas. Knowledge of, or a willingness to acquire
> knowledge of, the military is expected as a key element of the work. .

> Desirable
>
> A Master's degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Systems Engineering or
> relevant discipline. At least 5-7 years experience in a relevant post.
> Experience in the areas of sociotechnical systems and systems
> engineering would be particularly advantageous.

> Terms and Conditions :
>
> Salary : Commensurate with relevant experience
>
> Working hours : 37 hours per week. Flexible working time is offered,
> whereby staff must be in work during core parts of the day.
>
> Leave : 25 days per annum
>
> Security : Successful candidates will need to be Security Cleared.
> Clearance will be conducted by MOD, following provisional job offers.
> Clearance may take several weeks.
