Re: Childhood burns
Having worked in Nottingham I can confirm that, BTW, the advice to use
prophylactic anti-staph antibiotics for childhood burns was based upon the
"I once saw a case of TSS following a minor childhood scald so now every
child must be covered" brand of evidence based medicine practiced at the
local burns unit. To be fair to Raza Dar [who prepared the poster], he has
been attempting to test the hypothesis rather than advocating the policy.
In the absence of any robust evidence either way, I'm inclined to follow the
pragmatic view aired by most list members and not prescribe prophylactic
antibiotics but be aware of the small risk of TSS complicating not only
burns but also any abrasion [particularly if dirty].
