Technology-wise it certainly is not a problem to put together a virtual
educational CD. You can do it from a laptop with a digital camcorder.
Basically, we would need to think of a case we have been involved in that
would be a good teaching scenario - say Martin's case here, or the surgical
airway case I had on the M8 a couple of years ago, or the multiple casualty
incident in Shetland etc..
We would then write a story board and film an extrication with the fire and
ambulance service with several options such as intubate/don't
intubate/cric/combitube/LMA etc..
We could edit it with iMovie and embed sections of the video in a series of
webpages, allowing the person to find their own way through the scenario. A
few expert opinion links would be a good idea. This could then be burnt to
CDs (that gives you a max of about 15-20 mins of video per CD) or uploaded
to a website. I've not done the latter before, so would need to look into
how streamed video is set up on a website.
Not sure how much this would cost from the point of view of setting up the
extrication. The time involved to edit the footage and write the web pages
might be significant (including any learning curve involved!).
Not as much fun as role play, and not nearly as valuable as a learning tool,
but would be much cheaper.
