Hi,
I was tidying my Back-up files, and came accross the following piece of writing. I thought I would put it on my list groups, in case anybody feels they can offer me some sessional work after reading it. I am also attaching my Resume.
' PERSONAL STATEMENT. (Application for C.D. Diploma in 1997.)
I have been a psychotherapist for a number of years and a consultant for disability agencies in the last since 1992. During this time I have become increasingly interested in becoming a Community Development worker.
As a counsellor I am trained to assist individuals plan and implement changes which will empower them to reach their full potential; as a Welfare worker I will learn to understand and deal with the broader societal picture. I will learn to intervene at group and community levels on issues of social justice.
The disenfranchised, disempowered people I am working with at the moment (people with disabilities and their parents and/or carers), like other marginalised people, certainly need workers and other people skilled in helping them push for and organize change in the institutions with which they are in constant, often involuntary, contact.
It is relevant for workers in the human development field to be able to aid people to understand and change themselves.
However, without a knowledge of the legal systems and social policies of our Australian Society there will be times when a counsellor may just be "advising" her clients to adjust themselves to a system which pays lip-service only to issues of social justice and "fair play".
If I, as a counsellor, can help people deal with the injustices of the Australian milieu from a community, as well as a personal, level, those with whom I work will have a better chance of making substantial, far-reaching changes in their lives.
PS I don't know if you got the above e-mail. I always like to hear that my message has been received, having heard horror stories. So if you would confirm this, I would be most grateful. Just "Thanks" in the subject line would do until you get the time to answer more fully if you feel it is necessary/wish to...
