concrete gestures can be regarded as the ones made by
for instance a violin player using the bow to excite
a string, resulting in a sound and therefore is very
concrete and understandable to the observer, the public.
As such there is a clear relationship between the action
of the player - a bow stroke - and the result - a sound.
These gestures result into what is considered to be
'violinish behaviour'. Thus being concrete!
virtual gestures of data gloves are clearly not related
to their results as in the example I gave of the viollin
player! Gloves can be used in any way possible!
So there here is a clear case of decoupling of cause
and effect. Hence the typification of being virtual!
I think its a tendency going on for a long time since the
introduction of digital technology, where real world objects
- violin for example - are replaced by virtual models.
Of course the achievements are of significant importance.
However these virtual models which are used to synthesize
real models, can not replace the one's they are based on!
During the period I have been working with my own group,
the Schreck Ensemble, we have always used acoustic instruments,
voice, violin and bass clarinet, with close mike amplification
and signal processing of these instruments. There sounds
were enlarged through these means and showed such characteristics,
that synthesizing them would be almost impossible!
However synthesizing sounds, or using virtual gestures
offer a freedom that is not related to the limitations
of a performer.
As such I think that using a scale from concrete to
virtual is a very good way for indexation.
