OVERVIEW
Small-group teaching is widely recognised as an important part of a
university education, but changes in Higher Education are
challenging traditional methods. Communication and Information
Technologies (C&IT) are often suggested as an answer to these
challenges. However, introducing the use of C&IT needs careful
planning if it is to be successful.
This workshop will explore the ways in which C&IT can be used to
support small-group teaching, enhance group-based activities and
improve the quality of teaching and learning.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
During the workshop participants will:
* Discuss the role and functions of small-group teaching
* Explore the ways in which C&IT can support small-group teaching
and learning
* Consider an educational framework for the use of C&IT in
small-group activities
* Reflect on current practice and opportunities for change
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Participants will:
* gain a deeper understanding of the role of C&IT in small-group
teaching and learning
* consider the benefits of change
* construct a personal action plan
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Lecturers who teach (small) groups or who are considering
introducing group work and anyone involved in supporting small-
group and group-based learning and teaching.

During parallel sessions 1 and 2 delegates can try out the
Reflective Tools, produced by the ASTER Project, to consider a
current teaching situation, the potential for change and construct a
personal action plan. Alternatively, delegates can explore the range
of support tools and resources available and consider how they
might use them.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Dick Bacon is a consultant to LTSN Physical Sciences and has
been involved with many projects on the effective use of C&IT in
university teaching.
Catherine Bennett is manager of the TLTP3 ASTER Project,
examining the role of C&IT in small-group teaching and learning. For

Frances Condron is based in the Humanities Computing Unit,
University of Oxford. Her background is in archaeology.
Nick Hammond is a Reader in Psychology at the University of York
and Director of LTSN Psychology.
