"Children, Employment and Social Policy:
University research at the heart of government"
Three ESRC Collaborative Doctoral Studentships offered in association with the Department for Education and Employment, Inland Revenue and the Department of Social Security.
Applications are invited from well-qualified graduates, preferably with a relevant Master's degree, to undertake doctoral study designed to inform strategic policy thinking commencing in September 2001. Under the terms of the studentships successful candidates will undertake research on one of three interrelated topics. They will have the opportunity to work closely with research officers and policy makers in one or more of the above departments, to spend at least three months undertaking research in central government and to interact with professional researchers engaged in applied policy research. It is anticipated that the research will be published under the auspices of the appropriate government department.
The research topics are:
1. The effects of parental employment and unemployment on children and young people
2. Budgeting and employment decisions of low income working families
3. Combining paid work and lone parenthood
Applicants should indicate which topics they would be prepared to research.
The basic ESRC studentship of £6,800 (per annum) will be increased by up to £5,000 per annum depending on experience, qualifications and project. Students will be jointly supervised by Professor Robert Walker and Dr Tim Strangleman.
