Anywhere between £30 and £50 per tape hour, so it is certainly worth
shopping around and also important to find someone you trust and understands
what you want from the transcript. Do you want all the ers and ums etc. We
have one or two transcribers, for example, who do some preliminary sorting
and editing for us, using an agreed transcript. Remember too that there are
networks of transcribers - so if you want someone to do it and not pass it
on to a friend, make that clear at the start. We are usually under a lot of
time pressure, so it is often more important for us just to get them done
and less important as to who does them. Most transcribers now will e-mail
you the final version, but check. There are a few transcribers listed at
http://www.aqrp.co.uk/dir/ss-transcript.shtml
It is also worth making sure you have a good tape recorder and I would
strongly recommend using an extension microphone. Worth asking the
transcribers to advise - they know who has good tapes and can enquire about
the equipment used.
Like Jackie - I can give you the names of one or two good transcribers if
you e-mail me!

Subject: Hiring human transcribers
Having read the archives on software recognition software, I realise that I
probably need to use human transcribers for my PhD research. Can anyone
please advise on what is the going hourly rate in the UK? Is there a rule
of thumb for how long each transcription should take (I've heard the
formula - 8 X interview length). I'm not sure of the best way to find
people, apart from posting adverts on university notice boards, so any
advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Karen
