medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Diane, I did a history of "Women in the Church from beginning to the
present day " a few years ago in a Religion History class.
The professor had a wonderful video clip about Bridget which she borrowed
from a colleague. I asked her later when I was doing my grad work if I
could see it again and unfortunately the colleague had moved.
It was about Bridget who was the head of a double monastery. She had
control over 1000's of men and women and had amassed great amount of land
which was farmed etc for revenue. Her women did wonderful tapestries and
there was a lot of craft work done. Bridget, according to this video,
wrote some spiritual works and travelled to the pope but was kept waiting 4
months before being denied access to the man. She left her works for him
to read. Nothing ever came of all these works and they disappeared into the
woodwork of the RC Church ( according to the video).
When quizzing this history prof about the video, she wasn't sure of the
source, but did mention that some people consider this Bridget as legendary
and not an historical figure.
I have not been able to find any sources that would put me in touch with
this video but I will look up some notes, packed in boxes somewhere, and
see if I have any thing else on this topic that I can remember that might
help you.
Regards
Carol
