Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins
an Interdisciplinary Humanities Seminar
in its thirty-eighth year under the auspices of
The University of Pennsylvania
Department of Religious Studies
201 Logan Hall, Philadelphia PA 19104
Current Topic:
"The Wild Wild West: Religious and Societal Transformations on
the North African Frontier"
Chairs: William Gruen and Shira Lander (University of Pennsylvania)
The Philadelphia Seminar on Christian Origins will hold its final
meeting on Thursday, March 22, 7-9 pm in the second floor lounge of
Logan Hall at the University of Pennsylvania.
Michele Salzman, professor of Ancient History at the University of
California, Riverside, will be speaking on "Religious and Social History
of Roman North Africa." She will examine the Christianization of
aristocrats from Constantine to Theodosius II, with particular emphasis on
the role of religion in shaping the rhythms of daily life.
Professor Salzman is author of _Roman Time: The Codex-Calendar of 354 and
the Rhythms of Urban Life in Late Antiquity_ (University of California
Press, 1990), as well as several articles on Roman history and religion.
Harvard University Press will soon publish her most recent work, _The
Making of a Christian Aristocracy: Social and Religious Change in the
Western Roman Empire_.
In preparation, Prof. Salzman has asked that we read:
1. "L'aristocratie lettree paienne: une menace aux yeux d'Augustin (a
propos du sermon Dolbeau 26-Mayence 62)," in _Augustin Predicateur
(395-411)_, ed. G. Madec = _Collection des Etudes Augustiniennes, Series
Antiquite 159_ (Paris, 1998).
2. Augustine Sermon 198 (Dolbeau 198-Mainz 62), translation by Edmund
Hill in _Augustine Sermons III/11, Newly Discovered Sermons_, published
by New City Press (1997), pp. 180-237.
3. Augustine Sermon 62 , sections 7-16, translation by Edmund Hill in
Augustine Sermons III , published by New City Press (1991), pp. 159-169.
4. J.B. Rives, _Religion and Authority in Roman Carthage from Augustus
to Constantine_ Chapter 3. "The Failure of the Civic Model," pp.
173-249 would be good background reading.
