Subject: Current Internet Geography Data

March 19, 2001

I've just finished updating the Internet Geography Project website. On
it you will find maps, data and analysis on the geography of Internet use
and production. As always, questions, comments and critique are
welcome.

Regards,

Matthew Zook

Internet Geography Facts

The US, UK and Germany contain 42.3, 12.4, and 10.3 percent of the
world's domains. The New York Metropolitan area accounts for 4.8 percent
percent. (January 2001 data)

The countries with the fastest growth rate in domain names in 2000 are
Ireland (419%), the United Kingdom (325%), and Korea (321%). The
countries with the slowest growth rate in domain names in 2000 are Sweden
(53%), and Finland (67%). The world's growth rate was 128 %.

The 100 largest urban concentrations of domain names account for more
than half of all domain name registrations although they only account for
6 percent of the world's population. (January 2001 data) Fifty-seven of
these largest urban concentrations are now located outside of the United
States compared to forty-five in July 1998.

The five largest owners of gTLD domains accounted for 8.6 percent of all
registered domain names in January 2001.

Network Solutions is the registrar for 52 percent of all domains which is
down from 92 percent a year ago. (January 2001)

Currently, there is a net increase of ~ 150,000 gTLDs per week. This is
down from an average of 335,000 per week in 2000.
